STORIES OF HOPE – 98% Undetectable, 100% Committed: How Nyumbani is Giving Children with HIV a Chance to Thrive

“I am most fulfilled when I see a child who was once malnourished playing happily, indistinguishable from those without HIV.”
— Sarah, Nurse at Nyumbani Children’s Home

When Elijah* arrived at Nyumbani’s Respite Care facility in early 2024, he was gravely ill. Malnourished, weak from tuberculosis, and carrying a dangerously high viral load, his young life was at risk. Today, Elijah runs with his classmates, excels in school, and has an undetectable viral load. His recovery shows what is possible when children living with HIV receive the right care and support.
In Kenya, progress against HIV has been strong for adults. But for children, challenges remain: only 7 in 10 achieve viral suppression. This means thousands of young lives are still vulnerable. At Nyumbani, the story is different:

  • 98% viral suppression at Nyumbani Children’s Home
  • 95% viral suppression at Nyumbani Village

These achievements show that with the right approach, children can overcome HIV and thrive.

The Nyumbani Model of Care

Nyumbani’s success is built on five pillars:

  • Clinical precision. Every child is tested in our ISO-certified laboratory, allowing doctors to design tailored treatment from day one.
  • Adherence with compassion. Nurses, counsellors, and social workers help children understand and follow their treatment, even in school settings.
  • Nutrition and holistic health. Meals are designed to support growth and immunity, while caregivers create the stable, nurturing environment children need.
  • Dedicated staff. Our team’s expertise—and deep personal commitment—are central to every child’s recovery.
  • Data-driven monitoring. Regular tests ensure we detect problems early and act quickly

More Than Medicine

For Nyumbani, Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U) is a promise. A promise that HIV will not define a child’s future. Each child who achieves suppression represents more than a statistic. It means a healthier tomorrow, a brighter classroom, and a step closer to breaking the cycle of HIV.
